Department Manager, Mechanical Engineering (Minerals & Metals) - Vancouver

We are currently recruiting for a Department Manager, Mechanical Engineering to join our Minerals & Metals team in Vancouver.

The Department Manager, Mechanical, will lead the Mechanical Engineering team in driving mining projects and studies across BC and globally. This role involves setting the strategic direction and overseeing the discipline and offers the opportunity to shape and drive the success of the department.

About the role

  • Lead and manage the mechanical engineering team, ensuring projects are completed on time and to the highest standards by overseeing performance, reviewing deliverables, and providing expert technical guidance.
  • Drive cost-efficiency by managing project budgets, reviewing and approving mechanical capital cost estimates, and exploring innovative approaches to improve outcomes.
  • Ensure the mechanical team has access to up-to-date technical standards, reference materials, software, and tools to excel in their work.
  • Collaborate with project teams to review and approve discipline-specific strategies and engineering plans alongside the Mechanical lead.
  • Coordinate and arrange technical reviews as required by operating procedures and project execution plans.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, identifying their needs and offering tailored solutions to meet project goals.
  • Partner with leadership teams across offices to optimize resource sharing and inter-office collaboration.
  • Work with People & Performance to recruit, select, and onboard top talent, while effectively managing team workload.
  • Mentor and support team members in their personal and professional growth, providing both technical expertise and career development guidance.
  • Conduct performance reviews, offering leadership and support to enhance team performance and deliver technical excellence.
  • Foster a collaborative, customer-focused environment that promotes trust, innovation, teamwork, and high-quality results for client satisfaction.
 

About you

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
  • 15+ years’ proven technical and management experience with an engineering consulting firm or other large organization; construction experience is desirable.
  • Previous experience in the Minerals & Metals industry
  • Previous experience leading and guiding engineering teams.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng).
  • A proven track record managing multiple projects simultaneously or a single project of major size and scope.
  • A proven ability to deliver projects on time and on budget.
  • An excellent understanding of Mechanical engineering specifications, industry standards, practices, applicable codes including national, provincial and local codes, acts and regulations.
  • Strong problem solving and organization skills and ability to meet tight deadlines while providing exceptional service to our clients is a must.
  • Understanding of project budgets.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Willingness to travel.

Salary range: $150,000 - $190,000 annually 

Expected Salary: Variation in salary is determined by factors such as qualifications, relevant years of experience, and prevailing market conditions for the specific role.
