From 26 offices in 15 countries, with projects in over 80 locations worldwide, we create sustainable outcomes for our people, clients, and communities.

We are currently seeking an experienced Distribution Designer Specialist with proven expertise in BC Hydro standards and tools, including Distribution Application Design (DAD), Passport, Spida-Calc, PLS-CADD, and experience in railway and water crossing design to join our Infrastructure Engineering Business line in the Burnaby office. The successful candidate will play a critical role in developing high-quality electrical distribution designs, including the design of crossings, collaborating closely with designers, engineers, and project teams to deliver reliable and efficient solutions for overhead systems. This position requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to provide mentorship and support to team members.

About the Role:

  • Prepare detailed designs for overhead electrical distribution systems, ensuring compliance with BC Hydro standards.
  • Perform pole loading and structural analysis using Spida-Calc to validate system integrity and safety.
  • Develop designs and documentation using tools such as DAD, Passport, PLS-CADD, and other relevant tools for crossing designs.
    • PLS-CADD is essential for designing and analyzing overhead power lines, optimizing structural design by calculating pole loads, conductor tensions, and system configurations while ensuring safety and efficiency.
    • Specialized design considerations will be required for crossing areas, including railway and water crossings, ensuring that designs meet safety, structural integrity, and regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate the permitting process for railway and water crossing designs, ensuring all necessary approvals are obtained from relevant regulatory agencies and stakeholders.
  • Ensure designs are accurate, efficient, and aligned with project specifications and timelines.
  • Work closely with designers, providing technical guidance and support throughout the design process.
  • Review and validate design work completed by designers to ensure quality, accuracy, and compliance with BC Hydro requirements.
  • Mentor and assist designers in using tools like Spida-Calc, DAD, Passport, PLS-CADD, and handling crossing designs to enhance team capability.
  • Review and validate designs to ensure compliance with safety standards, regulatory requirements, and client specifications.
  • Troubleshoot technical challenges, providing solutions to address design or implementation issues.
  • Maintain a high standard of quality and consistency across all project deliverables.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and stakeholders to define project scope, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Coordinate with BC Hydro representatives for design approvals, ensuring all feedback is addressed promptly.
  • Support multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring on-time delivery while meeting quality standards.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to designers and junior team members, helping to develop their technical skills and proficiency in distribution design tools.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives, enhancing design workflows and efficiency.
  • Share expertise in Spida-Calc, DAD, Passport, PLS-CADD, and crossing design to strengthen overall team performance.
  • Act as a technical liaison for clients, contractors, and utility representatives, ensuring alignment on design expectations.
  • Foster positive relationships with stakeholders to support successful project execution.

About You:

  • Diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Must be registered, or eligible for registration, with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT), Professional Engineer (P.Eng), or Applied Science Technologist (AScT).
  • 3-5 years of experience in electrical distribution design, including BC Hydro-related projects.
  • Extensive experience with DAD, Passport, Spida-Calc, PLS-CADD, and crossing design (railway and water).
  • Strong proficiency in pole loading analysis and structural design validation using Spida-Calc and PLS-CADD.
  • Experience with railway and water crossing design, including coordinating necessary permitting processes and ensuring compliance with safety regulations and design standards.
  • Comprehensive understanding of BC Hydro standards, tools, and processes.
  • Proficiency in GIS tools, or similar software for distribution design.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with designers and engineers.
