We are currently seeking an energetic and enthusiastic Engineering Manager to be based in either Toronto or the Calgary office. If you’re the right person for the job, we are open to discussing you being located in another office location.

About the role

• Manage the activities of the project discipline design teams to ensure quality, time and budget objectives are achieved.

• Manage the engineering work plan and its implementation.

• Coordinates engineering work plan and its implementation.

• On large projects, alongside the Project Manager, create and execute project work plans and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements.

• Plan and lead project teams as a Project Manager for assigned projects.

• Significantly contribute to the successful delivery of Ausenco projects by working across projects and providing a high level of expertise in the various technical disciplines.

• Provide leadership and technical expert advice on designs, engineering processes or unique and unconventional methods.

• Knows how to manage all discipline activities on large, complex projects.

• Knows how to perform all discipline activities on large, complex projects.

• Knows how to manage complex technical discussions with third parties (customer, suppliers, and regulators) to facilitate appropriate technical decisions.

• Provide engineering personnel within the division with adequate engineering systems and procedures and training as required to execute work in an effective and consistent manner.

• Support ongoing development of engineering systems and procedures by interaction and liaison with Engineering and Project Services.

• Review and approve, or delegate (as appropriate), implementation plans and man-hour estimates to meet client scope and Ausenco job requirements. Confirm these are realistic and complete; identify assumptions and qualifications.

• Provide guidance, leadership and specialized technical expertise to the other engineers and team members in support of their personal development.

• Actively participates in coaching and mentoring throughout all levels of the discipline and assists with succession planning activities.

• Able to allocate limited resources among competing demands to staff projects with qualified people in order to form a cohesive, productive team.

• Responsible for identifying resource gaps and associated training and recruitment activities at all levels within the discipline to fill such gaps.

• Manage the performance of the group by complying with agreed commitments to budget, growth and the company's business plan.

• Set and maintain reimbursable targets for engineers: review and update forecast targets for utilization.

• Recruit engineers with appropriate range of skills and expertise to meet job demands and service client needs.

• Maintain engineering standards across projects and studies by identifying shortcomings, implementing accepted levels of practice, conducting critical reviews and holding engineers to account for standards.

• Confirm engineering discipline planning meets design requirements, scope and client expectations by maintaining a high level of communication with job personnel and clients.

• Keeps engineering management and business development personnel aware of new and emerging technologies.

• Convey knowledge base of each client's business, organization and objectives to team members.

• Have established lasting relationships with clients that foster potential partnership opportunities through building understanding and mutual respect with key clients.

• Communicate effectively with clients to identify needs and evaluate alternative solutions.

• Continually seek and influence others to seek opportunities to increase customer satisfaction and deepen client relationships.

• Work with Project Mangers in managing and leading day-to-day client interaction.

• In conjunction with the Project Manager, develop project scope based on understanding of clients’ business and operational needs.

• Act as one of the proposal and estimating leads for mid to large projects/assigned clients.

• Assist in the development of the project estimate, including vendor/suppliers’ negotiation.

• Work with GM/VP on proposal and estimate sign off.

• Prepare and manage engineering proposals and budgets, staying within the assigned budget and reporting any discrepancies.

• Lead and oversee the development and approval of work schedules to ensure that objectives of cost, quality and time are met.

About you

  • In-depth and relevant experience in multi-discipline minerals processing plants, particularly in gold, base metals, and industrial minerals.
  • Relevant experience with pressure oxidation (POX) circuits.
  • Engineering Management experience.
  • Minimum 15 years’ proven project management experience with an engineering consulting firm or other large organization; construction experience is desirable.
  • Degree or diploma in related engineering discipline.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada.
  • Enhanced knowledge of the Engineering ISO, AS, ANSI, API etc. standard design codes.
  • Proven experience leading design teams within a multi-discipline engineering and procurement framework.
  • Previous experience managing international projects would be an asset.
  • Highly developed self-management skills, including time management.
  • Proven ability to manage, motivate and influence employees at all levels.
  • A broad commercial sense and involved in expanding and developing business with new and existing clients.
