Our team in Canada, with a growing portfolio of utility projects across Canada is recruiting for a Senior Distribution Designer with expertise in underground electrical systems (including feeder cable replacement projects) to join our Industrial and Infrastructure Business line in the Burnaby office. As a Senior Designer, you'll lead the development of underground electrical distribution designs, from concept to construction-ready packages. You’ll collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, field teams, and clients to ensure safe, compliant, and cost-effective solutions for new builds, upgrades, and system replacements. About the Role

  • Lead the design of underground electrical distribution systems, including trench layouts, duct banks, cable routing, vault configurations, and grounding.
  • Support and lead feeder cable replacement projects, including assessment of existing infrastructure, cable upgrades, and re-routing solutions.
  • Produce and review detailed CAD design packages using AutoCAD, ensuring technical accuracy and constructability.
  • Apply BC Hydro standards and other relevant codes to all design work.
  • Perform structural and cable pulling calculations using SpidaCalc (preferred).
  • Incorporate field survey data, GIS information, and utility records into your designs.
  • Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure alignment across disciplines (e.g., civil, structural, environmental).
  • Develop complete construction work packages, including BOMs, trench details, cable schedules, and permit drawings.
  • Conduct design reviews, QA/QC checks, and support field implementation activities.
  • Mentor and guide junior designers, providing oversight and technical support.
  • Participate in client meetings, site visits, and design validation during project execution.

 

About You

  • A diploma or degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering Technology, Utility Design, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of experience in underground electrical distribution design, including feeder cable replacement or infrastructure renewal projects,  with a strong background in underground systems and hands-on experience supporting feeder cable replacement and upgrade projects.
  • Strong understanding of BC Hydro standards, permitting processes, and utility safety practices.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and experience preparing construction-grade utility design drawings.
  • Exposure to SpidaCalc or similar tools for structural and cable tension calculations (preferred).
  • In-depth knowledge of trenching requirements, cable types, vault configurations, and system grounding.
  • Excellent coordination and communication skills across engineering and field teams.
  • A collaborative and detail-oriented approach to design and problem-solving.
  • Experience mentoring junior staff and leading design phases of complex projects.
  • Registration or eligibility for registration as a Technologist (e.g., with Engineers and Geoscientists BC).

Salary range: $75,000 - $85,000

Expected Salary: Variation in salary is determined by factors such as qualifications, relevant years of experience, and prevailing market conditions for the specific role.
