We are seeking an experienced Senior Project Engineer with a strong background in the mining and metals industry to join our project delivery team. The successful candidate will play a key role in the development and delivery of a major mining and/or metals project, supporting the project from the early engineering and planning stages through procurement, construction, commissioning and handover.
The position will initially be office-based, supporting project development, engineering coordination, design reviews, project planning, procurement support, constructability reviews and preparation for project execution. Following the award of the EPCM contract and transition into the construction phase, the role will become FIFO site-based, providing engineering leadership and technical coordination in the field. The Senior Project Engineer will act as a critical link between engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, project controls, contractors, vendors and the client. The role requires strong technical and project delivery experience, excellent communication skills and the ability to operate effectively in both an office and remote construction environment.
About the role
- Provide senior engineering support throughout the project lifecycle from engineering development through construction and commissioning.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities across civil, structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation and process disciplines.
- Review engineering deliverables, drawings, specifications, calculations and technical documentation to ensure compliance with project requirements.
- Coordinate interfaces between engineering disciplines and identify potential design conflicts or gaps.
- Support the development and implementation of engineering execution plans, procedures and work processes.
- Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, HAZIDs, constructability reviews, value engineering workshops and technical coordination meetings.
- Ensure engineering decisions are aligned with project scope, schedule, budget, constructability, operability and maintainability requirements.
- Identify technical risks and work with the Project Engineering Manager and discipline leads to develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
- Support the management of technical queries, design changes, deviations, concessions and engineering clarifications.
- Support the EPCM team in delivering the project in accordance with the approved scope, schedule, cost and quality requirements.
- Coordinate engineering activities with procurement and construction requirements to ensure the project remains execution ready.
- Monitor engineering progress and identify potential impacts to procurement, construction and commissioning schedules.
- Work closely with project controls to understand engineering progress, forecasts, critical path activities and schedule risks.
- Participate in project progress meetings and provide engineering status updates.
- Assist with the development and maintenance of project schedules, engineering deliverables registers and action-item trackers.
- Ensure engineering deliverables are released in accordance with project priorities and construction requirements.
- Support the implementation of project change management processes.
Prior to transitioning to site, the Senior Project Engineer will play a key role in ensuring the project is ready for construction, including:
- Reviewing engineering packages for completeness and constructability.
- Confirming that construction drawings, specifications and technical information are available when required.
- Identifying engineering constraints that could affect construction sequencing.
- Supporting construction planning and work packaging.
- Participating in constructability and construction readiness reviews.
- Coordinating long-lead equipment and materials requirements with procurement and construction teams.
- Supporting contractor tender evaluations and technical bid reviews.
- Reviewing construction methodologies and contractor technical submissions.
- Developing engineering priorities based on construction sequence and site requirements.
Once the EPCM contract is awarded and the project moves into the construction phase, the role will transition to a FIFO site-based position.
Responsibilities will include:
- Provide day-to-day engineering support to the construction management team.
- Act as the primary engineering interface between the site construction team and the engineering office.
- Resolve technical issues arising during construction in a timely and practical manner.
- Review and respond to RFIs, technical queries, field changes and engineering clarifications.
- Coordinate engineering responses with discipline engineers and design consultants.
- Verify that construction activities are being executed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications and project requirements.
- Participate in site inspections, walkdowns and technical reviews.
- Support field engineering, quality and construction teams in resolving design and technical issues.
- Identify potential design changes and ensure they are properly documented and approved.
- Monitor construction progress against engineering release requirements.
- Support the management of site technical queries and engineering action registers.
- Participate in daily and weekly construction coordination meetings.
- Support commissioning and turnover teams as the project progresses toward completion.
- Coordinate technical interfaces with EPCM contractors, construction contractors, engineering consultants and equipment vendors.
- Review contractor submissions, technical documentation, drawings, calculations and methodologies.
- Participate in contractor technical evaluations and progress assessments.
- Monitor contractor compliance with project specifications and engineering requirements.
- Support resolution of technical and contractual interfaces between contractors and the EPCM team.
- Coordinate vendor information and ensure critical technical documentation is incorporated into the project design.
- Participate in vendor meetings, FATs, inspections and technical reviews where required.
- Work closely with Project Controls to monitor engineering progress and forecast potential schedule impacts.
- Provide accurate engineering progress information for project reporting.
- Identify engineering activities on the critical path and develop recovery strategies where required.
- Monitor engineering-related risks, issues, constraints and opportunities.
- Support project cost control by identifying engineering changes and potential scope growth.
- Prepare technical and engineering status reports for the Project Manager and Project Engineering Manager.
- Maintain appropriate engineering registers, including RFIs, technical queries, design changes, deviations and action items.
- Identify changes to project scope resulting from design development, field conditions, client requirements or construction requirements.
- Ensure technical changes are appropriately documented, evaluated and approved.
- Assess the potential impact of changes on cost, schedule, safety, quality and constructability.
- Coordinate implementation of approved changes with the relevant engineering and construction teams.
- Maintain strong configuration control throughout the project lifecycle.
- Demonstrate visible leadership in health, safety, environmental and quality performance.
- Ensure engineering decisions consider safety, constructability, environmental requirements and operational risks.
- Participate in safety reviews, risk assessments and field inspections.
- Ensure engineering and construction activities comply with applicable legislation, standards, codes and project requirements.
- Support the implementation of project quality requirements and inspection/testing plans.
- Promote a strong safety culture across engineering, construction and contractor teams.
- Stop or escalate activities where unsafe conditions or significant technical risks are identified.
- Support commissioning planning and execution from an engineering perspective.
- Participate in system walkdowns, punch-list development and closeout activities.
- Assist commissioning teams in resolving technical issues.
- Support mechanical completion and system turnover.
- Review as-built documentation and ensure engineering changes are incorporated into final documentation.
- Support preparation of operating, maintenance and technical documentation.
- Assist with final project closeout and lessons-learned activities.
About you
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from a recognized institution.
- Professional Engineering designation such as P.Eng. is preferred.
- Typically 5–10 years of engineering/project experience, with significant experience in mining, minerals processing, metals or heavy industrial projects.
- Demonstrated experience working on major capital projects through engineering, procurement and construction phases.
- Experience working within an EPCM or EPC project delivery environment.
- Strong multidisciplinary engineering coordination experience.
- Previous experience supporting construction and field engineering activities on mining or industrial sites is highly desirable.
- Experience with remote-site or FIFO projects is strongly preferred.
- Experience with brownfield and/or greenfield mining projects is an asset.
- Strong understanding of project engineering, construction methodologies and project execution processes.
- Strong project engineering leadership and coordination skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment.
- Strong understanding of project execution strategies and EPCM processes.

Salary range: $120,000 - $155,000 annually
