You’re an experienced aquatic biologist who has led freshwater field studies, supported construction monitoring, authored reports, and written environmental assessments relating to aquatic species and ecosystems. You have strong leadership skills and experience working collaboratively on interdisciplinary teams. The role will report into our Calgary office, but you may be required to travel to British Columbia, other parts of Alberta, or the Yukon, Northwest Territories or Nunavut for short periods of time.  Depending on your experience level, we support remote workers already based outside of Calgary, in Southern Alberta or Southeastern BC.

About the role:

  • Planning and executing aquatic studies and preparing technical reports.
  • Providing technical and regulatory expertise on projects that interact with aquatic environments.
  • Provide environmental monitoring support during construction projects in or adjacent to freshwater environments
  • Supporting the development of components for environmental assessments relating to aquatic species and ecosystems.
  • Managing or coordinating projects from proposals through to the delivery of quality reports.
  • Leading or contributing to the development of regulatory submissions, including Codes of Practice notifications and approvals, DFO Requests for Review and Authorizations.
  • Marketing Ausenco’s full range of services to existing and potential clients through client meetings, participation in workshops, conferences and similar activities.
  • Liaising with regulatory agencies, stakeholders and Indigenous peoples.
  • Mentoring more junior staff.
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic and fast-paced work environment.

About you:

  • A university degree in biology or a related field.
  • A professional designation (e.g., R.P.Bio or P.Biol.) or eligibility for a designation.
  • 5 -10 years of progressive experience.
  • Experience planning and executing biological programs and teams.
  • Understanding of freshwater fish, and their habitats, in Alberta, BC, and/or the northern territories.
  • Excellent working knowledge of provincial and federal regulatory requirements associated with fish or fish habitat studies, permitting, or impact assessment.
  • Experience with provincial and federal permitting.
  • Experience undertaking construction environmental monitoring.
  • Attention to detail as well as excellent technical writing and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to think independently and strategically, maintain a positive attitude, be self-motivated and employ a strong work initiative.
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic and fast-paced work environment.

Bonus Points

  • Experience working with provincial regulators and municipal authorities on permits and authorizations related to the aquatic environment
  • Experience working with federal regulators on permits and authorizations.
  • Experience collaborating with Indigenous peoples.
  • Experience with offsetting and habitat compensation in aquatic environments.
  • Experience with client liaison and business development.
  • Statistical analysis experience.
  • Experience with other biological disciplines (i.e., terrestrial or vegetation) or contaminated sites.

Salary range: $88,000 – $105,000 annually.

Expected Salary: Variation in salary is determined by factors such as qualifications, relevant years of experience, and prevailing market conditions for the specific role.
